J Blundell and Sons Ltd.

J Blundell and Sons Ltd.

English family goldsmiths Old English family goldsmiths business J.Blundell and Sons have been in the jewellery industry for nearly 200 years. The company emphasis has just recently changed to precious metals buying, moving away from sheet, wire and findings. Calculate the worth of gold We calculate the worth of any gold on the day it is received, based on the AM gold fix that day. However, payments are also dependent on the pureness and amount of gold. Gold is given a fixed price, twice daily, by the London Gold Fixing - a procedure enabling the market to trade at the same quoted price. The fineness of your gold Purity is measured by how many parts per thousand are pure. You can often tell the fineness of your gold by the number, or hallmark that is written on it. One popular English hallmark is 375, or 9ct, which means the gold’s purity is 375 parts per thousand (37.5%) pure. Please note that a number on its own, without an official assay office stamp. It is not considered a hallmark and does not necessarily represent the true purity of the article in question. Precious metals buying As always, we will continue supplying the same outstanding service ensuring a truly positive customer experience. The company emphasis has just recently changed to precious metals buying, moving away from sheet, wire and findings. We buy scrap gold, scrap platinum old jewellery and pay cash for gold. Melting and assay charges Our gold melting and gold assay service have a 24hr turnaround on most occasions at a cost of £25. Any other melting and assay charges vary on the type of metals being tested. The assays for these are usually between three to four working days. Sweeps from an incinerating process will take approximately 1 to 2 weeks depending on the type of material.

All About Precious Metals

Precious Metals

Hatton Garden has been London's metalworking heart for well over a century, and the London Assay Office sits just round the corner to hallmark what comes off these benches. This category covers the firms known for working in precious metals: gold, silver and platinum, plus the white gold and rose gold alloys most bridal pieces are built from.

Choosing the right metal for the piece

The 10 businesses listed here run the core trade services, making, resizing, repairs and restoration, alongside finished rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Some also work modern materials where they suit the job, palladium, titanium, tungsten and stainless steel among them. Metal choice is rarely just aesthetic. Platinum wears differently from white gold, palladium sits lighter on the hand, and each carries its own price and maintenance story that an experienced bench can explain in a few minutes.

Several listings take on bespoke work, building a piece in your chosen metal with guidance from a workshop team rather than a sales counter. If you specifically want to commission from scratch, the jewellery design and manufacture listings are a sensible next step. Compare the providers below by the metals they hold and the services they offer, then book a consultation to talk through your project.
